Niche marketing – how it works

Niche marketing is becoming the single most effective way to streamline your product and service offering. For the entrepreneur, niche marketing allows for absolute focus in designing, creating, and then marketing a product or service. It enables you to know your customers and their needs with high precision, so neither time nor resources are wasted. In simple terms, niche marketing is about selling to people who want to buy.

Niche marketers do not have to meet the needs of everyone. Instead, they define exactly who their prospects are, and then convert them into sales by marketing their offering directly to those prospects. The simplest way to explain this is to imagine that, as an entrepreneur, one day someone walks into your office wanting what you have to sell. So you sell to them. The accomplished niche marketer then works out all the details about the customer’s needs, background and circumstances. Then they aim their marketing resources at precisely the same type of person that first customer was. The marketing is then officially to a niche, rather than to everyone under the sun.

Niche marketing allows you to define the perfect client for you. Because you know that Mr Smith likes what you have to sell, you find someone just like Mr Smith and sell to him. The rest of the process is effectively simple. All you have to do is find clients who duplicate the profile of Mr Smith as closely as possible. This way you have the information profiling your ‘perfect client’. What this means is that you will know how to spot them and then market to them.

It will be even easier, too, to reach your perfect prospects. This is because you know who they are, where they live, what type of job they have and so on. This reduces the strain on your marketing budget, which is now about a niche of prospects, rather than a mass of potential prospects.

Once you know and can recognise your niche, your marketing materials can be created and developed to reach them. The materials become even better and clearer, and are essentially finely tuned to meet the niche that you know want your products.

Niche marketing allows for absolute clarity of understanding about your client’s problems, and thus less difficulty in providing solutions to those problems. This will enable you to provide good solutions, and also to predict future trends within the needs of the client base. If they want a book that tells them how to walk their dog at night safely, the good niche marketer will have seen this coming.

Good niche marketing allows for you to be seen as an expert in your field. The field is small, and you can dominate it. As the niche becomes more known to you, you will streamline your resources, boost your time management skills, and generally master your life as you begin to see where your time and efforts are best used.

In future articles we are going to look at how to choose a niche market. This is not easy, but we are highly confident we have the insight you need.
